Teachers’ awareness about
lesson study in BiH and Japan
Summary of the
questionnaire results: Questionnaire on lesson study and ICT teacher education
Purpose
The purpose of
the questionnaire survey is to see the differences of teachers’ awareness about
lesson study between BiH and Japan and to explore the possibility of
collaborative online teacher education.
Participants
BiH teachers 219
Japanese teachers 253
Selected results
1. Regarding the “Number of lesson
observations in a year,” Japanese teachers observed more lessons than BiH
teachers. However, the number of their lessons observed (by other teachers) was
almost the same.
2. Compared with Japanese teachers, BiH
teachers seem to think that their lessons should be observed regardless of
topics and students for example, while Japanese teachers seem to think that
their lessons should be observed in accordance with topics.
3. Compared with BiH teachers, Japanese
teachers evaluate lesson observations and obtaining feedback from teachers who
have observed the lesson.
4. Regarding the “Feedback after the
lesson” and the “Wish to get feedback after the lesson,” Japanese teachers
focus more on interactions between teacher and students, while BiH teachers are
more interested in teaching; i.e. lesson aims and teaching skills.
5. Regarding the relationships between
class observations and feedback after the lesson,
1) BiH teachers come to be more interested
in “the objectives of each part of the lesson” as the number of observing
lessons is increasing.
2) BiH teachers want to obtain more
feedback about “Interactions between students” as the number of observed
lessons is increasing.
3) Japanese teachers become more interested
in “Interactions between students” and less interested in “the structure of the
lesson” as
the number of observing lessons is increasing.
4) Japanese teachers want to obtain more
feedback about “students’ reactions” as the number of observed lessons is
increasing.
6. Awareness about online lesson study
1) Compared with Japanese teachers, BiH
teachers are interested in online teacher education and have a positive
attitude towards showing their lessons to teachers online.
7. Awareness about online vs face-to-face
lesson study
1) BiH teachers have a more positive
attitude towards showing their lessons online as the number of observed lessons
is increasing.
2) BiH teachers are more interested in
online teacher education as the number of observing lessons is increasing.

Lesson study and ICT in
in-service teacher education
ENGLISH DIRECTION
This questionnaire aims to understand teachers' awareness about Lesson
Study and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in teacher education.
Our project originated from the initial idea of Ms Lidija Pisker, who came from
Bosnia and Herzegovina to Japan in a Japan Foundation Fellowship Program in
2011 in order to research the in-service teacher education system in Japan. We
are interested to what extent the concept of Lesson Study is available in
Bosnia and Herzegovina and how we can share ideas with each other so as to
develop better teacher education programs.
We hope you will participate in this questionnaire.
